TIPS FOR HASSLE-FREE BACK TO SCHOOL

  • Two  weeks before the first day of school, set your child’s bedtime early, and have them wake up earlier in the mornings.  Make sure your child gets a full 6-8 hours of sleep each night.

  • Help your child organize and set up a study area in his/her room or somewhere in the house.  Allow your child to take the lead in organizing items such as notebook paper, pencils, pens, scissors, colors, and a dictionary.

  • Take  pictures from the summer and let your child reminisce about how much fun the summer was.  Give your child a scrapbook or photo album to put pictures in, then have him/her write a caption for each picture.  This is a good way to get children back into the groove of writing, but it won’t overwhelm him/her.

  • Sit down and help your child set some goals for the upcoming school year. Ask your child what he/she would like to improve on this year, what does he/ she want to learn this year, and what would he/she like to excel at this school year.  Keep these goals in a visible place so you and your child can keep them at the front of your thoughts.  Check in with your child once a month or so and see how it’s going.

  • Have your child write a letter to his/her  new  teacher .  The letter should be an introduction as well as inform the teacher of anything special about your child that he/she may not typically get to know until later in the school year.  Teachers may not always ask for this information up front, but it is definitely appreciated and will help the teacher get to know your child. It also sets a positive tone for good communication between home and school.
